Media coverage! Adult Orphan Tales
The other week I had the privilege of being interviewed by Angela Viesti, owner of Adult Orphans Collective. We met recently on Instagram and she made me ‘Week 5’ of her Motherless Mondays – Adult Orphan Tales. Whoop!
Read my Adult Orphan Tale.
Here are a few sneaky snippets to 'whet your appetite' (yeah, cringe):
“What’s the point in going through something so traumatic, and surviving it, if you don’t use it to do good?”
“Being raised in a single parent (and siblingless) family, being motherless, feels a bit like I have lost a huge part of my identity and my roots. I have become a harder person because of it, but stronger also.”
“Sometimes I found it frustrating when people commented on my actions and words, suggesting that I should do this or shouldn’t do that, automatically assuming that if I was strong and practical and didn’t cry in front of them I was hiding my grief away from them.”
“What surprised me most about my grieving journey was that I was so ill in that time, for over a year. One thing they don’t tell you about grief (well, who teaches us anything about grief really?) is how sick you can get.”
Sooo, whatcha waiting for? Get the full feature here!
I have to say, when I started The Adult Orphan I didn’t really appreciate that there were other regular people out there dedicating their time on a regular basis to writing, drawing and philosophising on losing a parent. Clearly my Googling skills (does such a skill exist?) aren’t quite up to scratch.
But since I started sharing my reflections on social media I feel part of a network; all a bit lost (at least previously, if not presently), all seeking connection without wanting to feel needy, all missing that special person who left us but keen to learn and grow from the loss, and all wanting to create a new and meaningful life, for ourselves and for others.
My hat's off and glass is raised to all of you Angelas out there. Keep on keeping on, and always reach out – there's a hand waiting for you just around the corner.
